Soldier Grasshopper (Chromacris speciosa)

Synonyms: Acridium xanthopterum, Rhomalea stolli |
Chromacris speciosa ranges from central Mexico to northern Argentina. It inhabits scrublands and savannas, e.g., dominated by species of the Myrtaceae and Solanaceae. The adults are dark green with some yellow stripes, and orange-red hindwings. The nymphs are black with some red spots, and are toxic. They are gregarious and can be seen marching through vegetation.
